The Best Way to Kill Cockroaches

You’ve got a cockroach problem and you want them gone. Trouble is, roaches are tough, resilient little pests that breed quickly and can live anywhere. They can squeeze through cracks the thickness of a quarter, and live for more than a month without food. And they can enter your home in bags, boxes, underneath doors, and through the tiniest crevices.

If you’ve got a pest problem and you want roaches dead and gone, these four tips can help you exterminate your cockroach infestation quickly and efficiently.

1) Prevent cockroaches from getting inside

  • Caulk and repair any holes around gas and water pipes, baseboards, outlets and windows
  • Place screens over windows and drains
  • Install door sweeps and avoid propping open doors
  • Unload boxes and bags immediately and remove from home

2) Don’t give roaches a place to hide

  • Dispose of newspapers, magazines and other clutter in the house
  • Fix or remove peeling wallpaper
  • Caulk or seal holes, cracks and small crevices inside the home as well as outside around the foundation
  • Inspect potted plants and get rid of infested ones
  • Outside of the home, remove wood, mulch and other debris piles, as well as any standing water
  • Keep wood piles and garbage cans at least twenty feet from the exterior of the house

3) Stop feeding cockroaches

  • Store food in tightly sealed containers
  • Use trash cans with lids, and empty garbage cans before they become too full
  • Limit where food is eaten in the house, and be sure to sweep, clean and vacuum food preparation areas daily
  • Never let spills and dropped crumbs sit; always clean up immediately
  • Never leave dirty dishes in the sink overnight; wash, rinse and put them away before going to bed
  • Thoroughly clean inside, under and around the stove, oven, microwave and dishwasher
  • Regularly clean drains using an enzyme cleaner or stiff wire brush
  • Fix all leaky pipes

4) Kill cockroaches at their source

  • After vacuuming, use Combat Baits in areas that show signs of roach traffic
  • Combat Baits can be placed behind appliances, at the back of cabinets and in the garage
  • Use Combat Gels for hard-to-reach areas, such as behind sinks; in addition, use gels to fill in small cracks and around openings where pipes enter beneath the sink
  • Combat® Baits and Gels allow roaches to carry the poison back to the nest where it effectively kills off roaches with domino-like efficacy
