The Basics

Throughout the world, there are over 12,000 species of ants. Some of the most common pest ant species in the United States are Argentine, Odorous House, Carpenter, Fire, Pavement, and Pharaoh Ants.

Ants are found throughout the United States, although species found in different regions of the country vary. Ant infestations are more likely to occur in single-family dwellings, because colonies usually nest outdoors and will only come inside in search of food or water.

Social Nuisance

Ants are social insects that live in colonies usually located in the soil near the foundation of your house, under concrete slabs, in structural wood, the yard or garden, trees or other protected places.

Most ant species do not nest indoors, but when food and water outside are in limited supply or when there are major shifts in the weather, ants will enter your home seeking refuge and resources. Once their resources have been depleted or are difficult to get, ants will travel to a new location. This behavior makes ant infestations hard to predict, control and prevent.

Breaking Up is Hard to Do

To determine the best method of control, it is important to understand what type of ants you have. When using baits, it's important to know what kind of food they prefer. Ant species have different food preferences and these vary throughout the year based on their nutritional needs. Although most ants are attracted to sweet foods, some show a preference for greasy or high protein foods.

Ants travel on trails marked by chemical pheromones. With basic soap and water, you can remove the current trail, however ants will create another trail if they find another source of food. Although ant baits are specifically formulated to be attractive to ants, they may not eat the bait if more desirable food, such as open soda cans or a food spill, is available.
