There are over 3,000 species of mosquitoes in the world and about 160 different species in the United States.

 

What They Look Like

 

Mosquitos have a slender elongated body covered with scales. Most mosquitos are very fragile looking.

 

Where They Live

 

Some types of mosquitos favor land that has flooded, while others are found in salt marshes. Other types of mosquitos prefer polluted water like storm sewers and others rain-filled locations. Mosquitoes can be found on all continents except Antarctica.

 

Where They Nest

 

Mosquitoes lay their eggs in standing or slow-moving water. Weeds, tall grass, and bushes provide an outdoor home for adult mosquitoes.

 

Steps to Prevent

 

To prevent mosquitos, be sure to empty any containers that have may have collected rainwater around your house, including clogged downspouts, and be sure to flush any birdbaths with clean water on a frequent basis.

 

Are They Harmful?

 

Yes, the most common irritation from mosquitoes is small, itchy, red bumps from their bites. However, there is more danger of which one should be aware as well. Mosquitoes are responsible for nearly 1,000,000 deaths worldwide each year. The most common diseases they spread in the U.S. include West Nile Virus (WNV), Saint Louis Encephalitis (SLE), Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) and Western Equine Encephalitis (WEE).
