Are Fire Ants Harder to Kill Than Other Ants?

Fire ants are a nuisance that can also be extremely dangerous in certain situations. If you notice them around your property, it is important to stop people from getting close to the colony, especially children. Once the problem is identified, the proper steps can be taken to eliminate the pests.

Differences Between Fire Ants and Other Kinds

It can be difficult to tell the difference between fire ants and other varieties. Identification is the first step in getting the treatment you need. Unfortunately, fire ants look a lot like other types of ants, ranging in size from 1/8 to ¼ inch long. However, one key factor in distinguishing fire ants from other ants is fire ant workers are not all uniform in size, where many other pest ant workers are uniform in size. The biggest difference, and the one you need to be mindful of, is the fact that fire ants are known to swarm and sting a host at the same time.

The reason for this action is that fire ants are sensitive to sudden movements and vibrations. Therefore, if they climb up a leg and the person starts kicking and jerking around, the ants are going to sting at the same time. For most people, fire ants are not lethal. You should wash the affected area and keep an eye out for any significant changes, such as swelling or intense itching. A small percentage of the population is allergic to fire ant stings, and these people will need to seek medical help immediately. If you are unsure if you are allergic, then you should pay attention if you start experiencing extreme sweating or shortness of breath.

Fire Ants Are Harder to Kill

It is not always as simple to kill fire ants as it would be with other ants. The reason for this is that most ant colonies have a single queen, so when the queen dies, the rest of the population is going to die out soon enough. However, some fire ants have multiple queens. This means that even if one is killed through a treatment, there are others to take its place. This does not mean it is impossible to kill fire ants, but it does take a little hard work and finesse.

It can require a bit of persistence to fully eliminate fire ants from your property. More than likely, you will need to implement several techniques at different times in order to ensure that the population is eliminated. It is a little tough, but ultimately, it is for the best of the people around you.
