- What are flying ants?
- ANSWER: Flying ants are those individual ants that find new ant colonies. Most of the time, all ants in an ant colony (workers and queens) are females. One or more times per year, a mature ant colony produces flying ants termed "sexuals" or "reproductives" because some flying ants are males and some are females. Normally, sexuals produced by colonies in the same area fly at the same time on the same day, improving the odds of a successful mating flight. Males die after mating while females drop to the ground, chew off their wings, and burrow into the ground to create a new colony.

- Why do I see more ants after I use the product?
- ANSWER: Increased ant activity to an ant bait means that the ant bait is working. When ants find a food source they like, they recruit other ants to bring it back to the nest. The more ants you see, the more ant bait is being carried back to the nest, the more ants are contaminated, ensuring colony elimination.

- How do ants transfer the bait?
- ANSWER: Only a fraction of ants (older workers) leave the colony to forage for food. These foragers carry food back to the colony and feed it to other workers, larvae, and the queen(s). Ants share food by a process called "tropholaxis", where they regurgitate food to feed another. Interestingly, adult ants cannot digest solid food. They transport it to the ant larvae in the colony, who digest it and regurgitate part of it to feed adult ants. Lastly, some insecticides, like Fipronil, can kill by contact. Ants that walk through ant bait stations will pick up insecticide on their bodies and can transfer insecticide to other ants as they interact with them.

- Which Combat® products can be used to kill Carpenter Ants? Where can I purchase these products be purchased?
- ANSWER:
Both Combat® Source Kill 4 (baits) and Combat® Source Kill MAX A2 (gel) are labeled for control of Carpenter Ants. In order to get rid of your ant problem you will need to target the source, or the ants’ colony. Combat® baits and gels are specially formulated to destroy the source. Ants will take the bait back to the colony, share it with other ants and the queen, and destroy its entire colony. The more products you place around your home the better. Place the baits and gel in places where you currently see ant activity and where ants may be entering your home. You may also use the baits outside near your home like outside of screen doors to target them before they come inside.
Combat® Ant Baits and Gels can be found at your local Wal-Mart, Target, Home Depot or possibly your local grocery store.

- ANSWER:
You can clean up Combat® gel products with a damp paper towel. If it is an area in which you plan to lay down another bead or strip of gel, be careful not to use any chemical cleaners, as these can act as repellents to the ants and will make the gel ineffective.

- What is the best way to kill ants?
- ANSWER: Most ant species do not nest indoors, but when food and water outside are in limited supply or when there are major shifts in the weather, ants will enter your home seeking refuge and resources. The key to exterminating ants is to kill the entire colony. If you just spray the ants you see, more ants will continue to reappear in search for a source of water and food. Combat® products provide the source kill you need and are a guaranteed solution!
1.Ants travel on trails marked by chemical pheromones to lead other ants to the food or water source. With basic soap and water, you can remove the current trail they are following; however ants will create another trail if they find another source of food.
2.Keep mulch and plants at least 1 foot away from your home and seal exterior cracks where ants could enter. To discourage ants from coming indoors, repair water leaks, do not over water plants, clean up food and liquid spills, store food in tightly-sealed containers, and don't leave out pet food.
3. Use Combat® Source Kill Max Ant Baits in common areas where you see ants and Combat® Ant Gel in cracks and crevices or places where ants might enter the home. Ants will take the bait back to their colony, sharing the insecticide with other ant and the queen, and killing the entire colony. - Do roaches always die on their backs?
- ANSWER: Roaches do not always die on their backs: it depends on the type of death. If they are exposed to a nerve poison, like most insecticides, they get hyper-excited and twitch. The loss of muscle control generally causes them to flip, and they do not have the ability to right themselves. They then typically twitch on their backs until they die.

- 2 questions:
1. If I use Combat® gel and bait stations but the roaches stick around and won't go back to their nest (they're tough New Yorkers), do I just allow them to proliferate? (If I kill the malingerers, doesn't that defeat your process?)
2. I believe the roaches are coming in through my bathtub drain from elsewhere in my apartment building. Will they spread out to my bathroom and kitchen sink drains? How can I prevent this? Nothing I've read tells me what to do if their nest is INSIDE the drain/plumbing.
Thank you
- ANSWER:
Technically, cockroaches don't have nests - they do have hiding locations where they normally are during the daytime. If you are seeing roaches out during the daytime and they do not run to a hiding place then this means that the roaches are affected by the material in the baits and will shortly die.
All sink drains in apartments will (at least should) have water traps to prevent sewer gases and small critters from coming into the living area from the sewers. It is unlikely that roaches can inhabit the area inside the pipe itself between the trap and the top of the sink. More than likely, they are using the outside surfaces of pipes to make their way from unit to unit or from outside to inside the building; it only takes a fraction of an inch for roaches to squeeze through to gain access between harborages, and condensation on pipes is an attractive source of water.

- ANSWER: Large and small roaches have different food preferences. Each roach bait is specially formulated to be attractive to specific roach species. Since roaches usually have several food sources, a bait has to be very attractive so that roaches will eat or come in contact with it for the bait to be effective.

- How do roaches transfer the bait?
- ANSWER: There are several ways in which cockroaches transfer bait to other cockroaches: through the eating of roach feces, roach regurgitation, consumption of dead cockroaches and their remains, and by contact. Nymphs (baby cockroaches) tend to stay in the nest and feed mainly on cockroach feces, making baits very effective in controlling the roach population. If a cockroach dies from eating roach bait, its carcass will contain enough insecticide to kill other cockroaches that feed on its remains. Dying cockroaches may also regurgitate and other roaches ingest insecticide in that way. Lastly, some insecticides, like Fipronil, can kill by contact. As cockroaches nestle together in the nest, they can transfer insecticide to one-another by contact.

- Several months ago we bought a box of 8 large roach Combat source kill2 traps. We decided we did not need to use them then as it was beginning cold weather. We left them sealed in the box and opened them today. It sounds like a rattle when you shake the traps. Does this mean that they have dried up inside and will not work? Is there a shelf life on unopened boxes of traps? Thanks
- ANSWER:
The rattling sounds is normal as the baits are solid inside. The bait may have come loose from the bottom, but will still be effective. The baits do not have an expiration date, but for best results follow label directions and replace every 3 months, or sooner if roaches return.

- If there are both large and small roaches would it be ok to get the bait that says for large roaches?
- ANSWER: Living in Florida, you may be experiencing both domestic roaches such a the German or brownbanded cockroaches, both of which are smaller species, or the Asian roach that looks like the German but which lives outside and comes into homes (a periodomestic species) Many of the larger roaches such as the American cockroaches, brown cockroaches and several other species that can live outside will also come into the home.
Probably your best bet is to get several of the baits: Combat Source Kill Max - purchase both the large and small roach products - for the inside of the home, and also Combat Source Kill Max roach killing gel for both outside and inside species.
If there are roaches outside that come in it may be wise to reduce the amount of light on the outside of the house (the periodomestic species are attracted to light) and to make sure that the house exterior is in good repair so the roaches have difficulty in finding a way in.
Please read and follow all of the labeling instructions that are with the Combat products.

- Boric Acid Powder VS. COMBAT®
Tell me why COMBAT® is better roach control than Boric Acid powder.
A lot of people say Boric Acid Powder works better than any

Only boric acid products registered by EPA for use as a pesticide against roaches may be used for this purpose. - ANSWER:
- what is the difference between combat platinum roach and combat source kill max, and what is the best one?
- ANSWER:
Combat® Platinum is the name formerly given to our Roach Gels and to our "Defense Kit" (which combines baits and gels into one convenient pack). In 2010, we repositioned our line to split it into Source Kill and Source Kill Max. Our Source Kill line contains the active ingredient Hydramethlynon (which kills the nest within days), and the Source Kill Max line contains Fipronil (which starts killing the nest within hours). There has been no change to the formulation or active levels of either of our lines - just simply a name change. So, Combat® Platinum Gel is now Combat® Source Kill Max Roach Killing Gel.
The question you must ask is if you should use baits or gel (or both). Baits are easy to use - just break them apart and place them in areas where you see roach activity. Gels are perfect for use in cracks and crevices because of the targeted syringe delivery system. Gels are very effective because they provide both food and water, which is what the bugs are seeking. But either is a good choice to kill roaches at the source.

- ANSWER: Try our Combat Source Kill for Large Roaches. It contains a compound called 'hydramethylnon' which is extremely safe to use and has an excellent control potential. Roaches feeding on the bait will begin to disappear in about two weeks. The really great thing about this product is that any female carrying eggs will eat more than she needs to feed herself and when she returns to her hiding spot, defecates and the later deposits her egg case, the newly emerged roaches will feed on the fecal pellets and also be controlled.

- What is the safest way to get rid of roaches?
- ANSWER: While it is true that Combat® uses poisons in their products, it is necessary to provide you with the highest quality of product that works to eliminate the source of the insect problem. Natural alternatives do exist to pesticides, but it is important to understand that "Natural" alone does not mean "safe". Boric acid, for example, is often considered a natural pest control solution, but even boric acid can be harmful if mishandled.
Combat's® bait products are contained in Child Resistant Packaging and can be placed in locations out of reach of children and/or pets (see a number of placement recommendations). Combat's® gel products are designed to be used in cracks and/or crevices, also out of reach of children and/or pets. - ANSWER:
Combat® bait stations can be placed in a child's bedroom. However, as you correctly noted, roaches are always seeking food and water and are often found in places that are damp or humid, and they are often attacted to warm places (such as near electrical appliances or outlets). So it is possible that they can find their way to bedrooms. Refer to the product label for recommended sites to place baits for best results.

- Why use a roach bait or ant bait?
- ANSWER: Roach baits and ant baits are a preferred tool of pest control professionals for roach control and ant control and minimal risk for human exposure to insecticide. Unlike sprays, they not only kill the insects you see, but also work to kill the entire nest/colony, the source of the infestation. Because the insects seek out the roach bait or ant bait and transfer the insecticide to other insects, less insecticide is used than with spray treatments. There is also minimal risk of exposure to insecticides because roach bait and ant bait is contained in bait stations or applied in hidden areas in the case of roach killing gel and ant killing gel.

- What's the difference between a bait and a gel?
- ANSWER: Roach baits and ant baits usually refer to solid insecticide bait products that are food and insecticide combinations that attract pests, and are sold in prefilled plastic bait stations. However, a bait can come in many forms, including solids, granules, gels, or liquids, and can be applied in a variety of ways. Roach killing gel and ant killing gel contain more water than do solid baits, so they are generally more attractive to insects. Gels are a type of bait that is usually applied using a syringe or similar device allowing targeted application in hard to reach places such as cracks and crevices where insects hide. Roach killing gel and ant killing gel are the preferred form used by professionals.

- What's the difference between an aerosol and a bait?
- ANSWER: Aerosols will only kill the bugs that you see, so you have to kill them one or a few at a time. If you see one roach, there are usually at least 200 more hiding somewhere in your home. Baits do not kill the insects right away, giving them time to return to the nest and share the roach bait or ant bait with other ants and roaches to eliminate the source of the problem. Roach bait, ant bait, roach killing gel and ant killing gel are also easy to use. They can be placed in those areas where roaches and ants usually are and will work continuously day and night to kill the source, providing you with long term control.

- Can I use an aerosol insecticide if I have baits or gel out?
- ANSWER: NO. Aerosols are repellents to insects. If sprayed insecticide contaminates the bait or gel the food in the bait will become less attractive to the insect and lose its effectiveness. Also, for baits to be effective, the insect has to go back to the nest. If the insect is killed before returning to the nest, the roach bait or ant bait will not be transferred to the other insects, ultimately failing to kill the source of the problem.

- Why aren't ants and roaches trapped in the bait stations?
- ANSWER: BAITS ARE NOT TRAPS OR MOTELS and bugs will not stay in the bait stations. Roach bait and ant bait work to kill the nest, the source of the infestation. "Source kill" happens when ants and roaches eat the bait in the bait station and then carry it back to the nest. Because the bait is transferred back to the nest, baits are more effective than traps, which only kill the insects that come to the traps.

- How do Combat® baits (gels) work?
- ANSWER: Combat® roach bait and ant bait are made of mostly food ingredients and a small amount of insecticide. The food ingredients are formulated with nutrients that Roaches and Ants need to survive, attracting pests to the bait. Insects eat the bait and return to the nest, where they share the bait with others, contaminating and killing the roach nest or ant colony. Combat® roach baits and ant baits contain insecticides optimized for speed of kill and transfer to achieve maximum control. Combat roach killing gel and ant killing gel work in the same way as do solid baits, except that the food and insecticide combination is in a gel form, instead of concealed in a bait station.

- How does Fipronil kill roaches and ants?
- ANSWER: Fipronil is a broad spectrum insecticide that disrupts the insect nervous system. Once an insect eats bait containing Fipronil it typically will die in 6 to 24 hours. This gives the insects enough time to return to the nest and share the roach bait or ant bait with others while still providing the quickest "source kill" on the consumer market.

- Should I move the baits?
- ANSWER: Roaches are not social bugs so they do not share or communicate with other roaches. If you find a better spot to move the roach bait to where you have seen more roach activity, you can move the roach bait. However, for ant baits, it is important to not move the ant baits or interfere with it while it is working. Ants will leave a trail to the bait, leading other ants to the bait to feed. If you clear away this trail or introduce additional smells, they will not be as effective.

- How do I know that the baits/gels are working?
- ANSWER: You will not see bugs die instantly and should see minimal bugs dead near the bait/gel. In fact you may see an increase in bug activity around the baits as they are attracted to the food source in the bait. Combat®'s baits and gels contain slow acting active ingredients that allow an insect enough time to return to their nest or colony before dying so that they infect other insects with the insecticide. This is how Combat is able to provide you with high quality products that kill the source of your problem.
For all of Combat®'s Source Kill products you should start to see a reduction in the amount of ants/roaches you see in the first week after you have placed the baits/gel around your home. In a matter of 3-4 weeks you should see a significant amount of reduction in ants/roaches.
For all of Combat®'s Source Kill MAX products, you should start to see a reduction in the amount of ants/roaches you see in the first few days after you have placed the baits/gels around your home. In a matter of 1-2 weeks you should see a significant amount of reduction in ants/roaches.
The timing associated with both of these products will vary depending on how big of an insect problem you have. If your infestation is quite large, it will take longer to kill the entire source. Keep baits out as long as the directions require ensuring they are out long enough to kill the entire source and replace as necessary. The more baits out the better, so put out all of the baits that come in a package and if possible, use both baits and gels to provide you maximum control.

- Can I use Combat® products as a preventive measure even if I don't have insect problems?
- ANSWER:
Combat® products can be used as a preventative measure. Roaches in particular multiply very fast, so it is important to stop a problem before it even starts. Roaches and ants can be transported into your home on accident by neighbors, boxes, or just a change in season.
If you have Combat® baits and gels out throughout your home, this can help you solve a potential problem early before it starts to interfere with your life. Keep baits out throughout your home and replace the bait/ reapply the gel every 3 to 6 months to ensure that they remain effective.Average Customer Review
- ANSWER:
- I have applied gel in a couple cracks. The gel seems to dry out and form a barrier. What should I do - leave it there or remove it and apply more?
- ANSWER:
I am not sure when you placed out your gel, but depending on the enviroment where you live, you may need to reapply the gel every 1-3 months. In a very dry climate it may dry out sooner. The gel will still work once it dries, but it is most effective in its moist state. If you can, remove what you currently have down and replace it as needed. If you can't get to all of the gel, don't worry about removing the old and just apply a little more on top of the old. For ANT gel, place many spots or dabs of gel where you see ants foraging and entering the structure. For ROACH gel, the gel can be applied only as spots or in a strip in cracks and crevices. A lower application rate should be used for re-treatments. Gel placements should be made at or near areas of roach traffic and suspected nesting.

- I just purchased the Combat Source Kill Max for Large Roach. Now I'm confused, do I cut open the top of the black bait? If not, how would it work?
- ANSWER: Please do not pull or break the top off of Combat bait stations! Combat Source Kill Max R2 is certified as Child-Resistant Packaging (CRP). Once you've broken the baits apart from the pack of four all you need to do is to place them where desired. There is nothing else you need to do to activate or open the bait stations. If you look at the sides of the baits there are openings that allow the roaches to go in and feed on the bait.
